"Please Dad, I Dropped Mine"
After watching his father successfully break off a banksia, this young yellow-tailed black cockatoo, worked hard to break off his own banksia nut. Hanging upside down, this way and that, and when he finally managed to cut through the thick stem with his beak, the nut dropped straight to the ground. It just didn’t seem fair. So, he returned to his father’s branch to beg for a share. Meanwhile, mum was tucked down in the middle of the coastal banksia enjoying her feed. It’s tough love, but he needs to learn.

"The Rainbow's Painted Gift for his Lady"

“The Kings Favourite Dish” Azure Kingfisher
The king (azure kingfisher) perches amidst the intricate tangle of mangrove roots ready to devour his delightful catch.
The vibrant colouration of this very small kingfisher is a striking focal point against the soft blues, greens and browns capturing the serene beauty of the mangrove ecosystem. The gnarled roots of the mangrove trees twist and entwine, and with the soft reflections, create a mesmerizing labyrinth of organic shapes and texture. It's a moment frozen in time, where the delicate balance of nature unfolds, and the timeless dance between predator and prey plays out against a backdrop of quiet wonder.

"Let’s go fly a kite"
Black-shouldered Kite
A master of the skies with a taste for small mammals, the black-shouldered kite hovers facing into the wind with its head completely still so it can peer intently down with those big red eyes to spot prey in open heath or grassland. The dark feathers around the eyes act like sunglasses cutting down the glare ‘all the better to see you with' in bright conditions. Such is their mastery of hovering, that despite the frenzy of wing action, they can maintain stable hover and a still head, even in a strong breeze.
"The Emu’s Siblings"
Young Magpies on Emu Mountain
Perched on rocky ground atop Emu Mountain, two young magpies share a quiet moment. The elder stands watchful, protective of its sibling as they navigate a landscape still bearing the scars of bush fire. Amongst regrowth and resilience, their bond speaks of care, survival, and the strength found in family.
"The Black Queen’s Apogee"
Yellow-tailed black cockatoo
This painting celebrates the triumphant joy of a female yellow-tailed black cockatoo feasting on a banksia nut at the top of a coastal banksia tree, symbolizing strength, success, bliss, and nature's beauty.
"Twinkle"
Barn Owl
Owls, and in particular the majestic barn owls, always give me a sense of quiet watchful wisdom and seem to be guardians of the night. I was lucky enough to meet ‘Twinkle’ at a birds of prey show at O’Reillys and this gave me a chance to observe her closely. She seemed like a perfect spirit guardian for my niece’s bedroom, and her striking colouration (whites, siennas and browns) complement the soft twilight colours of the background which give this piece a mystical, spiritual feel.

"Everything Pales in Comparison"
Winner of 'People's Choice' Award in "Materially Designed" RQAS Exhibition 2023
'Award of Excellence' in Queensland Wildlife Artists Society Inc (QWASI) 40th Anniversary Exhibition 2023
The pale-headed rosella is usually one of the more quiet and timid of the Australian parrots, but on this particular day they were too busy happily devouring the berries from the Corky passion vine to even notice my presence. It was a family affair, with both parents and three younger birds (still with a bit of red showing on their heads) enjoying the feast. Unfortunately, the Corky passion vine is a weed here in Australia, but that did not diminish their pleasure scoffing the tasty berries.

"Montgomery"
Tasmanian Masked Owl from Raptor Refuge.
I’ve always felt that owls are spiritual, and there is also something magical about edge or boundary places, such as twilight, bringing together the duality of night and day. This theme of duality continues through this painting. The Tasmanian masked owl is the largest tyto (masked) owl in the world and powerful (just look at those talons) but also vulnerable (endangered). He is also bold in his colouration, but soft at the same time. I’ve supported this theme of duality through use of a limited palette using strongly contrasting colours, perhaps mirroring the duality in all of us.

"Devoted Discombobulation"
You’re walking along a bush track, then like magic, a family of tawny frogmouths seem to mystically coalesce out of the surrounding branches. They seem to merge into the bush, but the striking eyes draw your attention. The parents both look watchful, protective of their baby, while the young one seems to look with curiosity. Hello.

"FAN-tastic Construction"
I had the great pleasure to see this tiny and beautiful Rufous Fantail constructing its nest, which is quite a masterpiece in its own right. It is a truly fantastic construction.
As the rufous fantail tends to its nest, there's a palpable sense of serenity and intimacy in the air, inviting the viewer to pause and appreciate the beauty of the moment. The bird’s striking colouration with black and white scalloped front and rufous accents stands proud against the soft and impressionistic background which suggests lush foliage with sunlight filtering through the canopy in dappled patterns.

"Butcher Shop Window"
It is common to notice butcherbirds when they are singing, usually atop a high tree or pole to best project their admirable vocal aerobatics. However, in this case, a small break in the thick bush gave me a window into the more secret world of the butcherbird - in his role as the stealth hunter. He was also browsing through a window, selecting a desirable cut of meat for dinner, some lizard tail, rump of rodent, or perhaps a caterpillar sausage. What do you fancy tonight?

"Winter Flame to Spring Song, A Cardinal’s Promise"
Northern Cardinal
Through winter’s frost and spring’s first bloom, the cardinal remains unwavering in its vivid red. A symbol of resilience and renewal, it stands among blossoms, bridging the seasons with its steadfast colour and timeless song.
"Winter Refraction, A Bluejay’s Illusion"
Blue Jay
The blue Jay’s brilliant colour is caused by light scattered through its feathers, a natural illusion. Perched in a snowy landscape, it glows against winter’s quiet beauty, a reminder that even in the coldest months, nature’s wonders shine.
"LBJ - Little Brown Job"
An affectionate term for those little brown birds that are so hard to identify when you just get a quick glimpse. It's actually a little Tasmanian thornbill; they are only about 10cm long (if you stretch him out from beak to tail).

“Rufous Masquerade”
A pair of Rufous whistlers turning the bush into a masquerade ball with their striking colours and beautiful song.
This painting was inspired by the stunning colours of a pair of rufous whistlers, and how despite this, they managed to camouflage so well in some dry Aussie bush. They are concealed but revealed by their beautiful song.
