A master of the skies with a taste for small mammals, the black-shouldered kite hovers facing into the wind with its head completely still so it can peer intently down with those big red eyes to spot prey in open heath or grassland. The dark feathers around the eyes act like sunglasses cutting down the glare ‘all the better to see you with' in bright conditions. Such is their mastery of hovering, that despite the frenzy of wing action, they can maintain stable hover and a still head, even in a strong breeze.
Acrylic, 70 x 70 cm, Floating Frame (silver and black)
Exhibiting at "On the Wildside" Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre (31 July - 7 Sept)
Young Magpies on Emu Mountain
Perched on rocky ground atop Emu Mountain, two young magpies share a quiet moment. The elder stands watchful, protective of its sibling as they navigate a landscape still bearing the scars of bush fire. Amongst regrowth and resilience, their bond speaks of care, survival, and the strength found in family.
Acrylic, 30 x 38 cm, floating timber frame (walnut)
After watching his father successfully break off a banksia, this young yellow-tailed black cockatoo, worked hard to break off his own banksia nut. Hanging upside down, this way and that, and when he finally managed to cut through the thick stem with his beak, the nut dropped straight to the ground. It just didn’t seem fair. So, he returned to his father’s branch to beg for a share. Meanwhile, mum was tucked down in the middle of the coastal banksia enjoying her feed. It’s tough love, but he needs to learn.

Rainbow Bee-Eater and Australian Painted Lady Butterfly
The magic of nature’s courtship. A stunning rainbow bee-eater presents a beautifully painted gift to his partner: a freshly caught Australian Painted Lady butterfly. The vibrant colours and intricate details bring this intimate moment to life, celebrating the beauty of love in the wild.
Acrylic, 44 x 34 cm, floating timber frame (natural)
(Studio Price $1,650)
This painting celebrates the triumphant joy of a female yellow-tailed black cockatoo feasting on a banksia nut at the top of a coastal banksia tree, symbolizing strength, success, bliss, and nature's beauty.
Acrylic, 31 x 39 cm, black floating frame

The blue Jay’s brilliant colour is caused by light scattered through its feathers, a natural illusion. Perched in a snowy landscape, it glows against winter’s quiet beauty, a reminder that even in the coldest months, nature’s wonders shine.
Acrylic, 24 x 29 cm, black & silver floating frame
(Studio Price $375)
Through winter’s frost and spring’s first bloom, the cardinal remains unwavering in its vivid red. A symbol of resilience and renewal, it stands among blossoms, bridging the seasons with its steadfast colour and timeless song.

This was painted to pair with "Three Dots Reflected in Magic Mangrove Mirrors". These paintings celebrate both the similarities and differences of these two types of dotterel. One that lives on the harsh dry gibber plain of inland Australia and their brethren which prefer living around water.
Acrylic, 61 x 30 cm, floating frame (black)
(Studio Price $1,950)
A small and cryptic bird, black-fronted dotterels are often overlooked. However, look closer and you will be amazed by their intricate patterns and subtle but beautiful colouration. As they move among the shallows and young mangrove saplings, their reflections ripple softly in the water.
Acrylic, 61 x 30 cm, floating frame (black)
(Studio Price $1,950)
I think little brown birds are seriously underrated, probably because all you usually see is a quick flash of brown as they flit away. However, this little guy, a Tasmanian thornbill, was kind enough to ‘strike a pose’ for me in a beautiful Correa Alba near the beach on Bruny Island. The rufous edges to the leaves of the correa beautifully complemented the rufous brown on the forehead, edges of the wings and rump of my little friend.
Acrylic, 30 x 15 cm, stepped floating timber frame
(Studio Price $450)
My tummy was grumbling, it was about time to head down the mountain and find some lunch, and just in that moment I spotted this little guy (a stunning Golden Whistler). Looks like he had already found his lunch.

I had the great pleasure to see this tiny and beautiful Rufous Fantail constructing its nest, which is quite a masterpiece in its own right. It is a truly fantastic construction.
As the rufous fantail tends to its nest, there's a palpable sense of serenity and intimacy in the air, inviting the viewer to pause and appreciate the beauty of the moment. The bird’s striking colouration with black and white scalloped front and rufous accents stands proud against the soft and impressionistic background which suggests lush foliage with sunlight filtering through the canopy in dappled patterns.

The pale-headed rosella is usually one of the more quiet and timid of the Australian parrots, but on this particular day they were too busy happily devouring the berries from the Corky passion vine to even notice my presence. It was a family affair, with both parents and three younger birds (still with a bit of red showing on their heads) enjoying the feast. Unfortunately, the Corky passion vine is a weed here in Australia, but that did not diminish their pleasure scoffing the tasty berries.

You’re walking along a bush track, then like magic, a family of tawny frogmouths seem to mystically coalesce out of the surrounding branches. They seem to merge into the bush, but the striking eyes draw your attention. The parents both look watchful, protective of their baby, while the young one seems to look with curiosity. Hello.

This little guy (a striated pardalote) was a real character, posing in the knobbly branches of an old coastal banksia. He was watching me closely, as if to say, “What are you doing here, this is my place?” To which I respond, “It’s ok little buddy, I’m just passing through, but you took my breath away with your spectacular oranges and yellows against that vibrant blue sky.”

An affectionate term for those little brown birds that are so hard to identify when you just get a quick glimpse. It's actually a little Tasmanian thornbill; they are only about 10cm long (if you stretch him out from beak to tail).

One of Australia's rarest birds, the forty-spotted pardalote, is restricted to only a few colonies in south-east Tasmania, mainly on Maria Island and Bruny Island. These tiny birds forage almost exclusively in white gums for invertebrates and manna (a sugary syrup exuded from white gums). They make small cuts in leaves and stems using a specialised hook on their bill and collect the manna. An action I have captured in this painting. Seeing the need for habitat restoration, Inala Nature Reserve started planting white gums in 1985 and the original little Inala colony has grown into a strong population.
