This series brings my love of birds into a smaller, more intimate format. Each painting distills the essence of the bird into a focused study. Though modest in scale, these works carry the same attention to detail and passion for the natural world as my larger and more complex pieces. The collection also includes experiments as I explore and develop ideas for different ways of portraying the personality of birds.
The Intimate Aviary offers a reachable way to welcome a moment of wild beauty into everyday life, without losing the depth or devotion behind each brushstroke.
Each painting is acrylic on canvas beautifully mounted in a matted frame. You can expect to see these exhibited in members exhibitions at Boonah Art Gallery and also in my rotating display at Yandina Historic House.

"Fuzzy Butt, Fuzzy Butt"
Australasian Grebe
The Australasian grebe moves quietly through the wetlands, then vanishes underwater in an instant. Popping up elsewhere like a cork, still fluffy, still alert. This painting captures the quiet mischief of a bird that’s all poise, puff, and surprise.

“The Tail of a Striated Snatch”
Striated Heron
Quick on the draw and just in time, this striated heron makes a slippery catch by the slimmest of margins. A fishy tale with a tail-snatching twist. Caught just by the tail, the fish teeters between freedom and fate in this frozen moment of skill, timing, and near escape

“The Pied Sentinel”
Pied Cormorant
Amid the rocky shores of Noosa National Park, the pied cormorant stands calm and alert. A quiet guardian of the coastline, it embodies patience and watchfulness, perfectly at home between sea and stone.

Double Barred Finch
The double‑barred finch finds sanctuary behind bars of thorny branches, its own banded chest echoing the pattern of its refuge. Here he is hidden from a hunter above who is also dressed in black and white - a black shouldered kite.

“Drifting Whistle”
Wandering Whistling Duck
The wandering whistling duck drifts effortlessly across calm wetland waters, its presence both elegant and watchful. Known for its soft, whistling call and graceful movements, this species embodies the quiet rhythms of the natural world. In this artwork, the duck is surrounded by reeds and reflections, a reminder of the delicate balance between bird, water, and sky. It invites the viewer to pause, listen, and share in the stillness of its wandering journey.
